7 Most Valuable Baseball Rookie Cards From The 1980s (2)

Without a doubt one of the most iconic cards of all time and one that would help change the face of baseball card collecting forever. It shows a headshot of a boyKen Griffey jr.with his signature cheeky smile and a bat slung over his shoulder.

The1989 Oberdeck Baseball Set, rather against the grain, put quality above all else and charge $1 a pack, which is nearly double the closest competitors at the time, and boy did it pay off.

[irp posts=“7210″ name=“Card Chronicles: 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie Card“]

Revolutionary was the double-sided wrapped card, printed with a hologram on high-quality paper and sold in tamper-evident packaging.

Griffey Jr.'s MLB career with the Seattle Mariners and beyond would only add to the legend of the card, with the outfielder playing in 13 All-Star Games, winning 10 Gold Glove Awards and 7 Silver Slugger Awards, and becoming an MLB MVP in 1997.

Junior was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2016.

This card was not a limited edition and some reports say around a million of these were made, but the value can still be very high.

1984 Roger Clemens Fleer Update RC #U-27(buy on eBay)

7 Most Valuable Baseball Rookie Cards From The 1980s (3)

This card features a fresh-faced Roger Clemens in his Boston Red Sox uniform, holding his pitcher's glove. The ultra-simple design is reminiscent of the time when Clemens' image took up most of it, with simple blue and white borders and lettering.

“The Fleer set from 1984 is very popular among collectorsConsidered one of the best sets of the 80's"

It's hard to say how many were made, with estimates running in a fairly wild range of 4,000 to 100,000.

However, there were many, some problems with the original packaging means that findingThey in 10 new condition are becoming increasingly rare. According to the PSA, only 6% of the 3,000 specimens submitted were in perfect condition out of 10, with another 43% rated 9.

If found on the market, 10 mint specimens are valued at around $1600 with 9 mint specimens valued at around $350. Ungraded copies are also popping up and can be purchased for around $35.

Clemens has not yet been voted into the Hall of Fame, which is inexplicable for some. When that eventually happens, that card value could see a boost.

7 Most Valuable Baseball Rookie Cards From The 1980s (4)

The most popular rookie card from one of baseball's greatest players of all time. This Topps card shows Henderson in action in a yellow and white Oakland Athletics uniform with the bench blurred in the background.

Ricky Hendersonis a Hall of Famer who has won two World Series and played in 10 All-Star Games during a staggering 3-decade career playing for some of MLB's biggest franchises.

There is no real consensus on how many of thesecardswere printed but it is extremely rare to find them in 10 mint condition. The map seems to suffercenteringproblems, and its popularity means it's usually been handled quite a bit.The corners also struggle to stay in mint condition.

Only 24 have been graded by PSA in Gem Mint 10 conditions, meaning their value is a whopping $45,000, with one card recently fetching $60,000 at auction.

As good as new 9Conditions they are much more common and this is reflected in the valuation of around $900. In low graded or ungradedCondition,They range in value from $25 to $50.

A word of caution is in order here, as these cards have been counterfeited in the past.

1984 Don Mattingly Donruss RC Nr. 248(buy on eBay)

7 Most Valuable Baseball Rookie Cards From The 1980s (5)

The first of two Donruss cards on this list, this one features a headshot of 1985 American League MVP Don Mattingly. "Donnie Baseball" wears a Yankees cap, which is the team he would spend his entire 13-year pro career with.

The card shows his name, the word Yankees, and the d'84 symbol at the bottom.

(Video) 1987 Topps Baseball Cards – 25 Most Valuable … Plus Bonus Listings!

“The 1984 Donruss set is a huge fan favoriteand Mattingly's rookie card has always been highly coveted."

PSA reports that Mattingly's retirement without a World Series win has resulted in a slight drop in demand for the card, but his relatively recent attempt at coaching will no doubt boost the value yet again.

In Gem Mint 10 condition, the card is rare and is therefore estimated to be around $2500 when it appears. A mint condition 9 copy would set you back around $300 while they can be picked up in a low or ungraded quality for around $20-$40.

1982 Cal Ripken Jr. Topps RC Nr. 21(buy on eBay)

7 Most Valuable Baseball Rookie Cards From The 1980s (6)

The second Topps card on this list is Legendary and everyone's favoriteCal Ripken jr.It features the two-time Al MVP posing on the practice field in full Baltimore Orioles uniform, bat slung over his shoulder.

The card is designed in a 90's style with Baltimore Orioles Orange detailing and lettering.

Ripken Jr. spent his entire 21-year career in Baltimore and holds the record for most consecutive games in MLB with a staggering total of 2,632, making up 17 full seasons.

He was selected to play in 19 consecutive All-Star games and helped the Orioles at the 1983 World Series. In 2007 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

"The card itself seems to have held up much better than Rickey Henderson Topps RC, with PSA rating over 350 as Gemmint 10 to date."

This lack of parity means they show up far more frequently and are therefore a bit lower in value, but still a staggering $3,000. Mint 9 rated cards are valued at around $300, while low or unrated quality cards can sell for $50 to $100.

Since retiring, Cal Ripken Jr. has bought 3 minor league teams, with his name being very heavily associated with baseball, which will only help his rookie card count going forward.

1984 Kirby Puckett Fleer Update Nr. U-93(buy on eBay)

7 Most Valuable Baseball Rookie Cards From The 1980s (7)

The second of the infamous 1984 fleet update to make the top 7 is thisKirby PuckettBeauty. It features a slightly odd selection of images, with Puckett kneeling on the lawn, bat in hand, trying to look casualhis Minnesota Twins uniform.

The card features the same simplicity as the Roger Clemens Edition, with blue and white detailing and the Twins logo on the bottom right.

Puckett is another franchise man who spent his entire 12-year career with the Twins. During that time, he played in 10 All-Star games and won 2 World Series, being named the 1999 ALCS MVP.

Puckett's career ended abruptly in 1996 after he was forced to retire due to vision loss in one of his eyes.

"He finished 3rdrdyoungest man in history to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001 at the age of just 41.

Kirby Puckett tragically died in March 2006 after suffering a fatal stroke.

All the limitations of this particular set are exactly the same as the Roger Clemens set, with a very high production volume but centering and packaging issues meaning they are rarely found in mint gem condition.

This all results in a value of $1,000 in mint 10 condition, while mint 9 specimens are graded around $300 and lower grades and are ungraded in any price range, selling for anywhere from $30 to $150.

1982 DonruSs Cal Ripken Jr. RC #405(buy on eBay)

7 Most Valuable Baseball Rookie Cards From The 1980s (8)

It's a testament to Cal Ripken Jr.'s legend that he's the only player to appear twice in this top 7 list.

This card features a headshot of a very fresh Ripken Jr. with aBaltimore Orioles-Kappeand casually thrown the bat over his shoulder.

The edge and the writing of the card are not in Orioles orange like the Topps card, but in the typical Donruss blue.

[irp posts=“10536″ name=“Card Chronicles: Billy Ripken Error Baseball Card“]

The card is probably Ripken Jr.'s second most popular card after 1982's Topps card, but it still remains highly sought after. The card is not very rare at all and there are almost always several different copies on the market, which inevitably affects its value.

It also appears to be much better than the Topps card, with a higher percentage being found in Gem Mint 10 states.

In Gem Mint 10 terms, this card is worth around $450, which is a tempting offer for any serious collector looking to get their hands on a bit of baseball history.

For those on a smaller budget, a Mint 9 copy can be picked up for as little as $50, with sales ranging from unrated to low-rated ranging from $5 to $30.

The 1980s are remembered for a long time by fans, pundits and the media alike. As I said, the era goessometimes underestimated in terms of pure baseball, but that doesn't translate to the trading card game at all and won't do so any time soon.

Since all players who had rookie cards are now retired and most of those who are inducted into the Hall of Fame are already there, it could easily be said that some of the rookie cards from that era have been forgotten might guess. However, since this is an era that truly changed the trading card game forever, these cards will live on forever as parts of baseball history.

As time progresses, more and more cards are likely to take light damageor locked away and fewer and fewer will be available on the market, driving up the value. This could be one of the last chances to get your hands on mint condition copies of these historical maps.

A big word of warning is needed as these cards have already become a favorite for counterfeiters due to their high value and simplicity. So always check that the person selling them is reliable and genuine.
