It's easy to get confused with all the different rules about what you can and can't pack in your carry-on and checked baggage. That's why I'm here to explain whether you can take aerosols, deodorants or hairspray on a plane.
Note: This post refers to TSA rules for travel from US airports. Some countries may have different rules. So if you are flying from an airport in another country, please check the rules of the authority in that country.
Can aerosols be taken in hand luggage?

You can use an aerosol form of deodorant, hairspray, shaving cream, hair mousse, perfume, sunscreen, or any number of other toiletries. And since an aerosol can contains liquid, it must conform to theTSA rules for liquidswhen flying with aerosols.
As a reminder, TSA's liquid policy states that all liquids in your carry-on baggage must be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or smaller. A larger container that is almost empty is still not allowed.
And all liquid containers must fit in a quart-size (approximately liter-sized) clear zip-top bag. Each passenger is only allowed one liquid bag in their carry-on baggage.
Other items that are also aerosols are spray cheese and whipped cream. If you really feel like you need to travel with these, you need to find a can that's 3.4 ounces or smaller.

In general, the TSA allows aerosols in carry-on baggage, but containers must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or smaller and fit in your liquid bag. However, read on as there are some exceptions.

Aerosol insecticides are not permitted in carry-on baggage, regardless of container size. TSA says they're allowed in checked baggage as long as they're not marked as dangerous goods (HAZMAT), but check with your airline before traveling with such items.
Aerosols containing flammable liquids or gels are not permitted in carry-on or checked baggage. Examples of these types of aerosols are things like spray paint, WD40, cooking spray, laundry starch, canned air, etc.
If you need any of these things, buy them once you reach your goal.
TSA also says dry shampoo that comes in a spray can is allowed in carry-on baggage, but only if the container is 3.4 ounces or smaller. I find this odd as the contents of the can are not liquid, but I don't make the rules. So if you like to travel with dry shampoo, make sure the jar is small enough if you want to pack it in your carry-on.

Can you take aerosols in checked baggage?

If you can't find your favorite product in travel size, consider packing aerosols in checked baggage. And you'll be pleased to know that aerosols are allowed in checked baggage.
But it's not that simple. If you are traveling with large quantities of aerosol products, you need to be aware of the limits that apply to aerosols in checked baggage.
Here's what TSA says:
“Toiletries aerosols in checked baggage must not exceed 70 oz. (68 fl. oz) total and each container must be 18 oz. (16 fl. oz.) or less.”
So if you use a lot of products that come in aerosol cans, you might want to look for alternatives. Cashthese amazing travel solid toiletries.
Another important consideration when transporting aerosols in checked baggage is how you pack it. Make sure the aerosol can has a lid and cannot accidentally start spraying.
It's also a good idea to put the can in some sort of bag in case it leaks at all. You probably don't want to spray deodorant or hairspray on your clothes.

Those TSA rules on liquids really screwed up travel, didn't they? Now they ask usis deodorant a liquid? Unfortunately, the answer is that it depends on the type of deodorant you use.
Spray deodorants and aerosol deodorants are considered liquids, which means they must comply with TSA regulations for liquids in carry-on baggage and aircraft aerosol limits for checked baggage.
Roll-on deodorant can get a little more confusing. If you use solid deodorant, that's not liquid, and you can pack it wherever you want.
I suggest not packing it in your fluid pouch as it takes up so much valuable space that you might want to use for things liketoothpaste.
But some roll-on deodorants are liquids. Are you using the type where small amounts of gel are squeezed through the slits on the top? Gel is considered a liquid, so you can only take it on a plane in your carry-on if it's 3.4 ounces or smaller and fits in your liquid bag.
Any other type of deodorant that uses liquid instead of a solid to achieve its effect is counted as a liquid.
If you use aerosols or any other type of gel or liquid deodorant, I recommend switching to a solid type, at least for travel purposes. That will doPacking for a tripmuch easier.
Why not try Freedom Deodorant?Freedom Deodorant is a 100% natural and organic deodorant that actually works without any toxins or skin irritants. Paraben free. aluminum free. Cruelty Free. Phthalate free. Effective protection.
Can you take pepper spray on a plane?
Pepper spray, mace and other types of self-defense sprays are not allowed in carry-on baggage at all, regardless of the size of the container. While you're likely to bring it for your own security, security considers these sprays potential weapons.
You are allowed to take pepper spray or other self-defense sprays in checked baggage, but there are restrictions.
Only one 4-ounce (118 ml) container of pepper spray or mace is allowed in checked baggage, which must be equipped with a safety mechanism to prevent accidental spills.
In addition, any self-defense spray containing more than 2% by mass of tear gas (CS or CN) is prohibited in checked baggage. You should also check with your airline before flying with pepper spray, as airlines may have stricter rules and not allow repellent sprays at all.
Note: Pepper spray is considered a weapon in many countries. If you're flying outside the US, please check the rules of the country you're visiting so you don't face a fine or worse.
