It wasn't long after this card came out that The Big Hurt was one of baseball's most played hitters and the most popular player in the hobby. Given the amount with which the1990 ToppsThe Frank Thomas Rookie Card is available, it will never be worth much in its simplest form. But there are a few others to hunt down, including Topps Tiffany, which has nicer stock and a much smaller print run. There's also the ultra-terse No Name on Front mistake, which has become one of the most commoncoveted cards of the era.

Baseball is very popular around the world, especially in America, its country of origin.

All manner of merchandise and memorabilia are sold to baseball fans, but perhaps one of the most popular and enjoyable to collect is baseball cards.

As with most collectibles, the value of baseball cards depends on factors such as market value, trends, age, rating, and overall condition.

So, without further ado, we wanted to take a look at 10 of the most expensive baseball cards in the world and see how they stack up!

Why is the Mickey Mantle Card so expensive?

The 1952 Topps #311 is believed to be one of a few remaining Mantle cards in mint condition. Although the card was not released in Mantles' rookie year, the post-a-playing career season that typically generates the highest card value, it was the year that Topps first began production of its annual set of baseball cards.

Anthony Giordano, a New Jersey waste management entrepreneur, bought the card in 1991 for $50,000. Ahead of the August auction, another version of the map sold in June 2021 for a record-breaking $5.2 million.

Topps #123 Sandy Koufax Rookie-Karte

Estimated PSA 9 coin value: $92,500

Dimensions: 2-5/8″ x 3-3/4″

Sandy Koufax, considered by most to be the greatest left-hander of all time, has a rookie card to his name and that's it.

His career was cut short by arthritis in his pitching arm, and in 1972 he became the youngest player ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Koufax, the left arm of God as he was known, possessed a raw power that helped him once batter a staggering 382 in one season.

He was also a matchmaker, maintained a World Series ERA under 1.00, and was twice named series MVP in 1963 and 1965.

Centering issues as well as dark print spots on the yellow background are usually the two main issues with this card.

This is my favoriteSandy Koufax baseball cardand in my opinion one of the best looking maps of the 1950s.

Topps Nr. 261 Willie Mays

Estimated PSA 9 coin value: $250,000

Dimensions: 2-5/8″ x 3-3/4″

This is the first Topps card to feature Willie Mays, putting it high on Mays collectors' wish lists and making it a key card in the hobby as a whole.

As with Mantle's 1952 Topps card, some still confuse this card with May's rookie.

Because it's #261 in the set, it's not a high-numbered card, meaning it's not as rare as Mantles' #311.

And if you recall, the 1952 Mantle card is relatively more expensive than his 1951 Bowman card.

The opposite is true for Mays: his Bowman rookie card is worth more than his 1952 Topps card.

It just goes to show that scarcity and condition can affect a card's value just as much as the player who is on it.

Like many Topps charts from 1952, this Mays edition is prone to tilting and centering problems.

Topps Hank Aaron #128, estimated value: $500,000

The only true rookie card for "Hammerin" Hank Aaron, despite its popularity, is a very coveted card. Still, finding a Mint version is a challenge as there are only 30 PSA 9 versions and 2 Gem Mint PSA 10 cards.

Aaron still has a huge collector base given his popularity as a player, someone many still consider to be the TRUE home run leader of all time.

Topps Tom Glavine No. 779 Rc

At the time this card was drawn from packs of 1988 Topps, Glavine was on his way to a 17-loss season as a rookie. No one seriously, no one could have seen 305 wins and the Hall of Fame in their future. But three years after this RC's release, the left-hander won the first of his two Cy Young Awards and earned a plaque at Cooperstown.

This card, like some others on this list, is a POP 1, meaning there is only one example of a PSA 10, and it was auctioned off in 2016. Much like the aforementioned Pete Rose rookie, if this card were put back on the auction block today, it would likely eclipse the $1,000,000 mark.

Donruss Two for the title #651

The 1984 American League batting championship race concluded with the final game of the season in which Don Mattingly defeated teammate Dave Winfield to win the title. Nice move by Donruss, both recognizable on card #651 in the 1985 set. There are two versions of this card, yellow lettering with red two, because the title is from wax packs. The white lettering with pink Two For the Title came from factory sets.

The fire of Fernando mania doesn't burn as brightly as it used to. But it hasn't been entirely forgotten either. Being pictured alongside Mike Scioscia and his five World Series rings isn't too shabby either. There's also something mystical about this card when it comes to ranking. Not a single specimen has received a Gem Mint grade from BGS, PSA, or SGC. When it comes to beginner cards,1981 Toppsis one of the weaker line sets of the decade. However, it now has a couple of Hall of Famers in Tim Raines and Harold Baines.

While his 1952 Topps card takes the spotlight, the 1951 Bowman card is Mickey Mantle's real rookie card and a sight to behold. The 51 Bowman set is one of my favorites and offers stunning color portraits.

The Mantle Rookie card features the big Yankee in a memorable pose with blue skies and clouds providing a wonderful backdrop.

Mick's rookie card was a high series card and as is common with these later numbered cards the mantle often suffers from various pressure and centering issues.

Keep an eye out for fake Bowman Mantle cards from 1951, one of the most common fakes in the hobby.

Estimated PSA 8 NM-MT Value: $65

One of the most coveted beginner cards of the 1970s, the1978 Topps Eddie Murrayshows the legendary racquet doing a practice swing and looking straight at the camera.

Topps, the 1977 MLB Rookie of the Year, recognized Murray as one of their "All-Star Rookies" on the set, as evidenced by the gold trophy in the lower right corner.

Over the course of his brilliant 21-year career, Murray was an 8-time All-Star, 3-time Silver Slugger, 3-time Gold Glover, and 1983 World Series Champion.

Perhaps the most telling thing about Murray's greatness is that he's on the shortlist of players with 3,000+ hits and 500+ homers, along with Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols and Rafael Palmeiro.

Looking at the PSA-10 grades, this card is actually the most expensive in the set, as the latest PSA-10 Murray rookie sold for just under $19,000 in May 2020.

Topps #230 Dave Winfield

Estimated PSA-9 Value: $75

One of the most interesting things about Dave Winfield, and a sign of his incredible athletic ability, was that he was called up by four professional teams in three different sports.

He was a two-sport star in baseball and basketball for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, so it wasn't too shocking that the Atlanta Hawks, Utah Stars and San Diego Padres each drafted him.

What raised eyebrows, however, was that the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the 17th round of the NFL Draft despite never having played college football.

Ultimately, Winfield decided to play baseball for the San Diego Padres starting in 1973.

And over the next twenty-two years, he went on to become one of the greatest players of his time, with twelve All-Star selections, seven Gold Gloves and six Silver Sluggers.

The 1980 season would be Winfield's last with the Padres, as the Yankees signed a ten-year, $23 million contract, making him the highest-paid player in the game at the time.

Topps #47 David Cowen's rookie card

Although Cowens was 69 and considered undersized to play middle, he defied criticism and had a very fine career both at that position and as a power forward.

He was named Rookie of the Year in 1971 and Most Valuable Player in 1973, winning two NBA titles in the process.

His 1971 Topps rookie card really stands out with its eye-catching orange background and green cartoon-esque Boston team name at the top.

Centering and misprints are common challenges.

Goudey Babe Ruth #53, estimated value: 4 million dollars

As a testament to just how popular The Babe was at the time is the 1933 Goudey setactually contains four cards of Ruth.

PSA Sea, #53 is the hardest to find, followed by #149 . Map #144 was duplicated and is more widely distributed.

Wert: $700

Take one of the biggest hitters of the 1990s, throw in a short-printed error version of his rookie card, and you have an awfully valuable card in your hands.

Thomas is the newcomer to the 1990 products and Topps made the mistake of printing some of the Thomas cards without his name on the front. Although it is not known exactly how many of these error cards were issued, the estimated circulation is estimated at 100-150.

In his 2012 official rookie season, Trout was an All-Star, Silver Slugger, finished second in the AL MVP race, and won AL Rookie of the Year. While currently ranked as the 5th most valuable baseball card, when the signed Trouts 2009 Bowman Chrome Superfractors card, serial number 1/1, was sold in August 2020, it became the most valuable baseball card in the hobby. Mike Trout is a generational talent, and his lone Superfractor rookie card from 2009, Bowman Chrome, will likely continue to have great potential.

Topps #56 Adrian Dantley Beginner card

Adrian Dantley's 1977 Topps rookie card rounds out our list and can cost thousands of dollars at the top end.

1977 Rookie of the Year Dantley had an impressive career that included six All-Star appearances and two scoring titles.

His is a sharp looking rookie card with its nice clean design and just the right amount of color.

As with most 1970s sets, centering and printing errors are common challenges with this map.

Topps #3 Neil Johnston beginner card

Estimated PSA-9 Value: $4,000

Neil Johnston's 1957 Topps Rookie card can look a bit spooky.

Johnston spent eight years in the NBA with the Philadelphia Warriors, winning a championship and six All-Star nominations.

The Hall of Famer was known for his goal-shooting and rebounding skills, and led the league in each of those categories at least once before knee injuries forced him to retire.

Its ghostly appearance is accentuated by an inky black border, which isn't something you often see on sports cards.
